Help Make a Difference -- Katrina McLean, JA Alumni

There is no way that I could have known that my decision to attend my first Company Program meeting would completely shape my future. My involvement in JA opened my eyes to the world of business, the value of financial literacy and instilled in me the belief that I can succeed in whatever career I choose.

JA is helping students harness their potential and focus towards achieving their goals. They are helping our youth develop their confidence, communication skills and analytical thinking. But did you know that for every $1 that is invested in JA, $45 in economic prosperity is created in Nova Scotia?

There is no way that I could have known that my decision to attend my first Company Program meeting would completely shape my future. My involvement in JA opened my eyes to the world of business, the value of financial literacy and instilled in me the belief that I can succeed in whatever career I choose.

My story starts in rural Cape Breton, where I grew up on a family owned and operated oyster farm. I spent my childhood watching my parents run their business quite literally in our back yard. Our head office was in the living room! But outside my living room, there were very few formal opportunities for youth to develop tangible skills that would help them transition into the workplace. When JA came to my small school of just 150 students from grades primary to twelve, I jumped in head first and gave it my all. Company Program gives students a safe place to push themselves and get outside of their comfort zone.  JA provides valuable lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom.

Company Program gives students a safe place to push themselves and get outside of their comfort zone.  JA provides valuable lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom. And because of JA, I earned a scholarship which has helped me afford a post-secondary education. For the first time in my life, I finally feel like I am at the right place at the right time and that is because of the start I got from JA.

Please consider joining JA’s community of support as a monthly donor. A gift of $10 per month can help more student’s access JA programs in financial literacy and workplace readiness. For $25 per month you can help a student like me who wants to join Company Program. Helping JA support our province’s economic and social future takes a combination of volunteer participation and financial contributions. Your donation will help more students experience what I was lucky enough to experience.

Thank you so much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Katrina McLean
