Program Overview

Purpose

This program provides students with practical information about preparing for the working world while still in junior high school. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to research potential careers, and learn how to plan for and keep a job. They will also develop their personal branding and job hunting skills for earning a job.

Classroom Model

  • Tailored towards Grade 7 and 8 students
  • Enhances and reinforces skills learned in social studies, languages, and mathematics
  • Teaches through hands-on activities and discussions
  • Co-curricular to the junior high school curriculum
  • Google Powerpoint accompanies the program for a visual aid in class

Teacher Roles and Responsibilities

  • Register to deliver the program with JA, we will supply a guide and student workbooks
  • Introduce students to the program and do activities with students
  • Facilitate the in-class lessons
  • Option to provide a JA Certificate to students upon completion of the program
  • Feedback after the program is welcomed by JA

Program Content

Lesson 1 – My Brand

Through self-reflection, interviews and creation of a personal logo, students explore the importance of building a positive personal brand for the future, starting in junior high school.

  • Recognize that the choices they make in junior high school can have a direct impact now and in the future
  • Identify corporate and personal brands that represent positive reputations
  • Design a logo as part of expressing a personal brand

Lesson 2 – Career Mapping

Students explore how to use life experiences to develop work skills and how to map a path to employment goals.

  • Identify work skills already developed from experiences and activities
  • Plan significant markers they need to reach to earn a particular job

Lesson 3 – My Career Blog

Students reflect on the program and showcase their learning through a blog entry.

  • Create a blog entry expressing their thoughts and learning
