From Here To There: Eric Turner
My experience with Junior Achievement started in 1997 at Duncan MacMillan High School, when, as a grade 11 science geek planning on pursuing a career in medicine, I signed up to participate in the Company Program.
My first year in JA was incredibly rewarding, and I was recognized as Salesperson of the Year for Nova Scotia. My second year was even more thrilling, as I was part of the Company of the Year and won both President of the Year and the CANJAC award.
Junior Achievement ignited my ‘entrepreneurial and managerial spirit’ and put me on a path to perusing a career in business that included my Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and International Business at McGill University in Montreal.
To say the learnings in the Company Program are robust is an understatement. At a very young age, you are put in the advantageous position of not only learning how to sell and market a product, but how to actually run a company and manage people - skills which continue to serve me well today.
Today, I live in Toronto and work for RBC, where I have enjoyed progressively more senior roles in both Personal and Commercial Financial Services since I started in 2003. In my current role, I am a Director, Financial Advisory Services. I manage incredibly talented group of people who assist our commercial banking colleagues with annual client reviews for our mid-market business clients as well as the underwriting of new commercial credit. In addition, our group is responsible to uncover potential revenue/volume growth opportunities and suggest credit structure changes in order to make things simpler for our clients to improve their overall client experience.
I can attribute so much of my success to what I learned in Junior Achievement, and continue to act as a facilitator of the JA programs such as ‘The Economics of Staying in School’ and ‘Diversity in Action’ any chance I get. I encourage anyone thinking about their future to join Junior Achievement. You will gain the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to succeed not just in school and business, but in every facet of your life.
